Vintage Yamaha Golf Cart Oil Pump Replacement

Recently our early 80s vintage Yamaha golf cart started dripping two-stroke engine oil quite severely.  It had been leaking for a while, and while the leak was not particularly excessive, this summer it became a problem.  I also knew from previous investigation that the oil was coming from the two-stroke oil pump – what some people call the “injection” pump.  Looked like it was time to get into this issue further.

The only real issue was just getting at the pump as there was no practical access to the pump with the engine mounted in the cart.  Therefore addressing the issue required removing the engine. Though the removal wasn’t terribly complicated, it actually took much longer than replacing the pump itself.

While I had the engine out, I cleaned the belly pan and running gear and replaced the two rear motor motor mounts.  These  mounts are modified “V” shaped metal brackets connected by vulcanized rubber that allows for limited movement and flexing.  The rubber had failed and the mounts collapsed so while I was in there, it was time to replace them.  The front mounts were replaced a while back due to the same failure, and were easily accessible even with the engine mounted.
